One of our new projects co-funded by Herts County Council, Strong Body Strong Mind – a part of the Building Life Chances programme – aims to improve the overall health and wellbeing of young people through engaging in Personal Trainer and Youth Worker led gym activities. During each one-hour session, the group of 12-17 year olds are guided on how to use fitness equipment safely and effectively, while learning about the benefits of physical activity for body and mind; all guided by Anthony Parris, an experienced, local youth worker provided via our partnership with OneYMCA.
Our Health and Wellbeing Manager, Pav Medowski, spoke about the sessions and the benefits that they provide the young people of Hatfield:
“Using this funding, we’ve been able to introduce teenagers to using gym equipment, including cardiovascular machines, resistance machines, dumbbells, kettlebells and more. Our participants have learned why physical activity is important for our overall wellbeing and have been able to develop new friendships in the process.”
Elaborating on what has gone well with the sessions, Pav noted that there had been an overall improvement on the young people’s mental and physical wellbeing.
“The majority of participants treat our gym as safe space to come to every week. This is the place where they can freely express themselves and be active in a friendly and supportive environment.” … “They’ve realised that facing the fear of coming out of their comfort zone will eventually make them feel empowered and stronger mentally.”
